3 PH cities vying for top world wonder
by FFE PH News staff
Once again, Filipinos will harness the power of the internet to help three Philippine cities win a slot in New7Wonders. Earlier, the power of the Filipino netizens was put to the test in New7Wonders of Nature and succeeded by winning a coveted place for Puerto Princesa Underground River.
Switzerland’s New7Wonders Foundation has just narrowed down their list of the world’s top urban centres to 77, and Cebu, Iloilo and Vigan are among those vying for the top spots.
Before being narrowed down to 77 contenders, the New7Wonders chose from a roster of 1,200 nominees from 200 territories. This number was soon cut down to 300. A panel of experts for the foundation aims to cut down the 77 to a short-list of 28 by October 21.
A series of fierce campaigning for the cities that make it to the top 28 is expected to start next year. The final 7 will be announced by December 7, 2014.
Founder and president of the New7Wonders Foundation Bernard Weber said the cities campaign aims to ‘generate debate about the challenges cities face … and how they are responding to them.’
New7Wonders Cities is the third of the Swiss foundation’s crowd-voting initiatives – following New7Wonders of the World and New7Wonders of Nature. Voting is usually done through a website, phone calls and text messages.
