4 hair problems related to overall health

Having a bad hair day? There must be something wrong with your health. Here are 4 hair problems that may just mean you need to check up with your doctor:

Dry and Limp Hair

Do you have a dry, limp hair? Limp hair may be brought by swimming in chlorinated water or dyeing too often. But if you once had a lustrous hair, the change may be a sign of hypothyroidism. An underactive thyroid doesn’t release the normal amount of hormones the body needs to metabolise food. Other signs of hypothyroidism are unexplained fatigue, sudden weight gain, and feeling cold most of the time. With doctor’s advice, hypothyroidism can be countered by taking medication to increase hormone levels.

Thick Dandruff

Dandruff is a common problem that can be treated with the right anti-dandruff shampoo. But if the dandruff comes in thick, scaly patches, you might be dealing with psoriasis. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that pushes the skin to process skin cell turnover faster. If you already have an existing autoimmune disease like multiple sclerosis or Crohn’s disease, then your chance of having psoriasis increases. There are a number of remedies for scalp psoriasis, including medicated shampoos and creams.

Hair Loss

On average, we lose 100 strands of hair a day. But if hair loss comes in clumps and your hair is noticeably thinner, then this might be a sign of stress. Medications that affect the hormones like birth control pills and antidepressants may also be the cause. In other cases, deeper health issues may be the culprit, including hypothyroidism or hormonal imbalance relating to polycystic ovarian syndrome. In cases where the root cause can be several things, it’s advisable to visit the doctor before attempting to self-medicate.

Dry and Brittle Hair

Hair that breaks easily is a sign that you’re not eating enough proteins. Hair is made up of a protein called keratin, and not having enough protein in the diet can weaken the hair. Brittle hair may also be a sign of a thyroid problem, so it is best to ask your doctor for opinion.
