554.4 M Philippine tourism fund to lure 10m Tourists
The Budget Department has released Php554.4m for the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) in its efforts to boost the number of foreign tourists to 10 million by 2016.
Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said ‘This latest release supports our efforts to bring more visitors into the country. We’re already seeing more foreign tourists flocking to the country.
‘Further improving our growing tourism industry will help create more business opportunities and generate more jobs in tourism-oriented communities.’
The fund is divided into two: Php125m is part of TPB’s regular subsidy and is for second quarter funding. Meanwhile Php429.4 m will be under the board’s Special Account and will cover first quarter operating costs. With the funds, TPB will focus on marketing and promotion of the following sectors:
- Philippine products
- Landmark destinations
TPB will channel the funds in its promotional activities that include:
- Trade and consumer fairs, exhibitions and events
- Familiarisation programmes for wholesalers, retailers and media
- Multimedia campaigns that target international tourists
