Why should Asianovelas be banned on Primetime?
K-Drama fans won’t be too happy with former Manila Mayor and now Buhay party-list lawmaker Lito Atienza Junior after he filed a bill that seeks to boot Asianovelas out of prime time.
But he has a good reason behind it.
‘Foreign teleseryes have been eating into the prime time schedules of television companies, and thereby push the Philippine-produced shows to unfavourable time slots’ the lawmaker said.
House Bill 3839 seeks to ban foreign teleseryes from being placed in the TV prime time slot between 6pm to 10pm. This is to give locally-produced shows more air time, said Atienza. In the Philippines, shows from Taiwan and South Korea have particularly broken into popular culture with hits like ‘Meteor Garden,’ ‘Jewel in the Palace,’ ‘Lovers in Paris’ and ‘Stairway to Heaven.’
Atienza recognised that the bill may be unpopular among the public. But he said that the ban will eventually ‘promote local creativity and empower Philippine producers to create content and employ more local talents.’
The bill is now with the House of Representative’s Committee on Public Information.
