No big beauty titles in 2014
In 2013, the Philippines had a bountiful harvest of beauty titles, 2014 however ended with many of our beauties settling as runner ups.
AS THE holiday season ended, Miss Philippines beauties ended as runners up in four separate competitions abroad. Right on New Year’s Eve, Mutya ng Pilipinas Glennifer Perido was named second runner-up at the 2014 Miss Tourism International held at the Putrajaya International Convention Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with Miss Venezuela Faddya Halaba Troisi besting over 60 contestants from all over the world.
Perido, a 25-year-old, nurse from Kalinga, Cordillera, took the title Miss Tourism Metropolitan International and Miss Andaman Popular Award. Perido said she was proud and overjoyed to have given honor to the country following the back to back win of her predecessors Rizzini Gomez and Angeli Gomez in 2012 and 2013, respectively. A three peat would have put the Philippines in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Miss Tourism Thailand Ploy Wutthayakorn was named Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International (1st runner-up); Miss Netherlands Charina Bartels was Miss Tourism Global (3rd runner-up) and Miss China Sun Weng Kong was Miss Tourism Cosmopolitan (4th runner-up).
A day earlier on Dec. 30, Ferina Juny-Ann Carpio nearly captured the Miss ASEAN 2014 crown finishing first Runner-up to Miss Thailand Melada Nantanurak in the finals held in A-Star Phulare Valley, Chang Rai, Thailand. Miss Vietnam Trinh Hong Que was second runner-up. Carpio, a Communication Arts graduate of Assumption College, was a former 26K model of ABS CBN’s Deal or No Deal and could have duplicated Jhezarie Javier’s win in 2005.
The Miss ASEAN pageant, which features two delegates from each of the eight ASEAN member-countries, is different from the Miss Southeast Asian contest which also crowned its 2nd winner Miss Vietnam Thu Vu on Dec. 13, with Miss Philippines Precious Nicolle Diloy as First Runner-up and Miss Thailand Praethara Charoenkullachoy as 2nd runner-up. Diloy, a 19-year-old Maragondon beauty, is Miss Cavite 2014.
Miss Global Philippines Catherine Almirante also finished second Runner-Up in Miss Global 2014 finals held aboard the Crown Princess Cruise from California, USA ending at the port of Mexico on Dec. 20. Miss Canada Ela Mino won the title with Miss Australia Elise Duncan, Miss Kazakhstan Aishan Lighg, and Miss Sri Lanka Benazir Thaha named 1st, 3rd and 4th runners up, respectively. Almirante, a 22-year-old, model and karate green belter from Cagayan de Oro province, also won Best in Evening Gown, National Costume and Fashion.
Four runner-up finishes ushering the year 2015 could bring luck to the Philippine representative in the on-going Miss Universe pageant in Doral City, Florida on Jan. 25.
