How Brazil coaxed Ibra to watch the World Cup
Swedish football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, ‘Ibra,’ may not be attending the 2014 World Cup in Brazil wearing his national team’s colours after Sweden failed to make it past the qualifying match versus Portugal. But he is coming anyway after thousands coaxed him in social media by using #VEMIBRA.
After Sweden failed to qualify for the World Cup, Ibra was quoted by media as saying ‘A World Cup without me is not worth watching.’ This led Brazil to jumpstart an online social media campaign this week that aimed to flood Ibra’s accounts with invitations to watch the World Cup opening match.
Through YouTube user Desimpedidos, the #VEMIBRA video was launched featuring many of Brazil’s most popular celebrities, including football icons Dani Alves, Raí, Bebeto and Ronaldo.
They all had one thing to say: ‘Vem Ibra’ or ‘Come here, Ibrahimovic.’
Since its release on Monday, the #VEMIBRA video has garnered more than 1 million views and has generated countless number of tweets mentioning Ibrahimovic’s Twitter account @Ibra_official.
Fortunately, the hashtag has resulted in a positive response:
The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil will take place from 12 June to 13 July.
