Reports have been circulating that international singing sensation Charice has been insulted by American singer Rex Smith last Tuesday. But Smith’s manager insisted that Charice was not even present during the incident.

Charice’s musical director Troy Laureta said on Thursday that the incident happened during the 21-year-old’s sound check for a show at the Raddison Blu Hotel Cebu.

Laureta said he and Charice were on stage when Smith went up to Charice and told her to stop what she was doing. When Laureta told the American singer they were in the middle of a sound check, Smith started arguing with him. Laureta said Smith had to be escorted out the venue when he started shouting and was already very angry at them.

Laureta’s account was backed up by Charice’s manager Glenn Aldueza. Aldueza added that the Pinay singer was shocked by the incident but did not want to make a big issue out of it.

Smith’s manager Danee Samonte said that Smith did argue with Laureta but denied that Charice was around that time. Smith, who did not know Charice is performing before him in a corporate event, wanted to talk to the technical people as they were changing the stage’s set-up.

Samonte said that Laureta told Smith point blank, ‘You are disturbing a sound check, get off my stage!’

An argument between the two started and Samonte said he had to break up the two. He added that he went back to the stage later and apologised to Laureta.

Although Samonte admitted that Smith should not have gone to the stage, he insisted that the American singer will never disrespect anyone as reported.

‘Yung sinabi na ininsulto ni Rex si Charice – there’s no one there… Rex will never do that because he’s a perfect gentleman. I’ve been working with him for 10 years, he’s never (shown) any attitude like that,’ Samonte said in an interview with Manila Bulletin.

Smith popularised the songs ‘You Take My Breath Away’ and ‘Simply Jessie’.
