Coco Martin: an A-list actor
by FFE Entertainment News Staff
From a mere cameo role in the movie Luv Text in 2001, Coco Martin has come a long way in showbiz and is now considered one of the most talented actors if his generation.
A proof of Coco’s A-list stature is his award as one of People Asia Magazine’s People of the Year, alongside 13 other individuals who stood out in their respective fields in 2013.
The awarding ceremony was held on Tuesday night at the Raffles and Fairmont Makati hotel, with the guest speaker none other than President Benigno Aquino III.
Dubbed as the ‘the prince who would be king’, People Asia honors Coco for his slowly but surely climb to success.
“In Philippine showbiz, it would be easy to look at someone like Coco Martin, the baby-faced boy wonder of primetime TV and prince of indie films and say, ‘Oh he has the looks. He has the luck, and that’s why he’s made it,’” People Asia wrote.
“But a close study of his career- one that has spanned over a decade- shows a patient and steadfast climb up, one without shortcuts.”
Two of his indie movies, Serbis (2008), and Kinatay (2009), competed in the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, a manifestation of Coco’s impressive caliber in acting.
Other individuals awarded are Serbis and Kinatay Director Brillante Mendoza, Superstar Nora Aunor, Miss World 2013 Megan Young, Shell country Chairman Edgar Chua, ABS-CBN Channel head Cory Vidanes, singer Kuh Ledesma, fashion designer Criselda Lontok, Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla, basketball coach Chot Reyes, Sorsogon Bishop Gerard Deveza, dentist Steve Mark Gan, hotelier Tom Meyer, and RCBC Chair Helen Yuchengco Dee.
Coco said he is honored to share the award with such respected personalities.
Last year, Coco also took home the Most Admired Male Personality in Philippine TV in the 2013 Anak TV Seal Awards, and the Best Drama Actor of the Year in the 27th PMPC Star Awards for TV.
Coco has been dubbed as the Nora Aunor of his generation. Do you agree with the comparison? Share your thoughts on the comment box below.
