Coco Martin: showbiz’s resident Gentleman
The rebel image continues to cause a lot of hearts to flutter thanks to portrayals by showbiz’s original bad boys Ace Vergel and Robin Padilla. Popular teen idol Daniel Padilla has continued the legacy he inherited from his uncle Robin, and teens love it.
But is the opposite of the bad boy image also appealing? Is the gentleman-type still uso in the Filipino’s panlasa? If we take Coco Martin as an example, then we can say gentlemen definitely still hold power over a lot of hearts in the Philippines.
Coco had just recently displayed his brand of gentlemanly charm during his first shoot for the teleserye ‘Ikaw Lamang’ with Kim Chiu. According to the pair, Ikaw Lamang director Malu Sevilla surprised them by asking them to kiss during the first taping of the series.
‘Yun nga po yung kauna-unahang eksena namin ni Kim, kissing scene,’ said Coco, ‘Siguro pang-break lang ng pressure, ng kaba, ng ilangan.’
Coco admitted he was quite nervous despite having starred alongside Kim in two previous teleseryes. He said ‘Siyempre, hindi ako nagiging ganun kakumportable… bilang lalaki at bilang babae po si Kim.
‘Siguro nandoon ako sa parang makalumang pagkatao ko na hindi ako basta-basta.
‘Siyempre gusto ko ring iparamdam sa kanya na bilang lalaki, alam ko yung… gusto kong maramdaman niya na, lalo na nakatrabaho niya ako ngayon, na mataas yung respeto ko sa kanya.
‘Para pag may ginagawa kaming mga eksena na medyo delikado, mararamdaman niya na hindi ako nagte-take advantage o anuman po.’
Kim is not alone among those who were fortunate to experience the type of security only a refined man like Coco can give. When asked whom he liked better between Andi Eigenmann and Maja Salvador, his co-stars in the 2011 soap ‘Minsan Lang Kita Iibigan,’ Coco said ‘Unfair para sa lalaki na mamili sa kanilang dalawa.
‘Ang hirap mamili parehong napakaganda at napaka-talented ng mga kasama ko.’
Coco even went as far as impressing Superstar Nora Aunor. After working together in this year’s film ‘Padre de Familia,’ Nora said she would like to imitate Coco’s being maalalahanin and professional.
When the 32-year-old award-winning actor got tangled up in an issue with Angeline Quinto, who said they shared a ‘special relationship,’ Coco veered from confrontation and only said nice words for the singer-actress: ‘Sa part ko, nirerespeto ko na lang kasi, ako bilang lalaki, di ka dapat pumatol, lalung-lalo na [kapag] babae yung nagsasalita.
He added ‘Wala akong masasabi sa kanya. Ang natatandaan ko lang maganda ang experience ko sa kanya bilang katrabaho at mahal ko siya bilang kaibigan.’
Of course, Coco’s love team partner Julia Montes also had something to say about Coco’s star quality. When asked to describe her TV leading man with a word, the first thing that came to mind was ‘gentleman.’ Julia added that Coco was a good guy and maalaga in all aspects.
Despite the chemistry between CocoJul, fans’ moniker for the love team, Coco denied that he was courting Julia on the set, saying that this just wasn’t his style. Julia meanwhile said that their friendship was getting deeper. But both have not confirmed anything yet.
Given Coco’s gentlemanly streak, we can safely say Kim Chiu will be in good hands for the whole duration of Ikaw Lamang.
