Sports icon and retired football captain David Beckham has arrived in Tacloban City Airport at 12:30pm (Philippine time) today to see oversee Unicef’s relief operations in the typhoon-ravaged city.
David Beckham is an ambassador of Unicef: the United Nations’ arm that targets children and mothers. He arrived in Tacloban with other Unicef members to oversee the organisation’s ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts in the city.
In an earlier interview, Beckham said he welcomed the opportunity to spend Valentine’s Day with typhoon Yolanda survivors and added that though he won’t be with his wife they can still ‘celebrate before or after.’
The Beckhams were one of the first celebrity couples to show their generosity towards typhoon victims last year by donating 20 boxes of their designer clothes and shoes to the British Red Cross for a fund drive.
This is the second time David Beckham has been to the Philippines. The first was in Manila in 2011 when he was with the American football team LA Galaxy on an Asian Tour. That time, Beckham played a friendly match with Philippine national football team Azkals and also visited a shelter for street children in Manila.
