Derek’s career the fruit of his own labour
Derek Ramsay has caused quite a stir the past week after being mentioned in Instagram by Kris Aquino. The two have already clarified the issue to the public, saying they were not taking advantage of the other and that they are both happy with their respective partners: Kris with Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista and Derek with a non-showbiz girlfriend.
However, the 37-year-old actor did not just end there. He made sure everyone understood that his success has been solely built through sweat and determination: ‘As for my career, I’ve worked hard to get where I am.’
Derek started as a model and VJ before landing his big break as Mito in the teleserye ‘Ysabella,’ where he played opposite Judy Ann Santos. His almost 10-year showbiz career has since then slowly climbed with hit teleseryes and movies, culminating in two box-office blockbuster movies: ‘No Other Woman’ (2011) and ‘The Unkabogable: Praybeyt Benjamin’ (2011) which grossed around Php300m each.
Both are still in the list of highest-grossing Filipino films of all time.
But where Derek is now? The half-British actor has just signed a major three-film deal with movie producer Regal Entertainment. As a ‘Regal Baby’ Derek is set to work with GMA7’s ‘biggest star’ Marian Rivera, which has the actor excited since it will give him a chance to ‘work with people outside my network.’
Derek is also set to join Arlyn de la Cruz’s indie movie ‘Maratabat,’ a film about Muslim family culture. According to Kris, who had turned down the role because of conflict in schedule, the film is ‘slated to join the Barcelona Film Festival.’
When asked if he is ready to play more challenging roles like a gay character, Derek said he would love a good challenge. However he said that preparation is needed to portray such roles: ‘I believe my competitiveness and drive to do new things will pull me through.’
