As a Valentine’s bonus, Dutch rail Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) will be playing matchmaker this year by introducing a love coach to their shy passengers.
The onboard flirtation short courses will be handled by coach Esther Populier in a special ‘social carriage’ reserved for singles looking for love. They will take place in the Amsterdam to Maastricht service.
Research by NS showed that 25% of train passengers make eye contact while onboard or flirted with fellow passengers. Around 3% of those surveyed revealed to turning the onboard fling to a full-fledged romance. Populier said ‘You’ve got a lot of practice material because you travel with so many people.’
The concept of finding love on trains is not entirely new. Last year, train company ROPID rolled out singles carriages in Prague, Czech Republic that encourages love-struck passengers to meet and mingle onboard trains. The love train also serves as a campaign to get locals out of their cars and into the metro.
