The European Union pledged to support Italy following a shipwreck off the coast of Sicily.
European Regional Policy commissioner Johannes Hahn said on Thursday “The EU institutions express their sadness for what happened at Lampedusa.
“It’s a real tragedy that involved children too. The EU has to see what it can do to help.” So far, 150 people have been rescued from the ship carrying mainly migrants from Africa. The latest death toll rose to 114.
Italian politicians have criticised the country for not giving enough assistance for migrants coming from North Africa. The Council of Europe, a pan-European human rights body, is calling on neighbour states to support Italy.
“The countries of the Council of Europe and the EU must show more solidarity with Italy and the other countries (facing the large-scale arrival of undocumented migrants).”
