Eugene Domingo gets acting nods from Madrid film Judges
Eugene Domingo is once again basking under the international spotlight after being cited by Madrid for Best Actress in this year’s 3rd Madrid International Film Festival.
Eugene, more known in the Philippines for her comedic roles, has been nominated for Best Actress in her performance in Jun Lana’s drama period film ‘Mga Kwentong Barbero.’ The movie will also square off with other foreign films for Best Foreign Feature Film and Best Director awards.
In Mga Kwentong Barbero, Eugene plays Marielou, a widow of a local barber struggling during the early years of Martial Law. The film is a story of sisterhood as Marielou rallies the women in her town against a male-dominated universe.
The 42-year-old theatre actress will face 11 others in the Best Lead Actress in a Foreign Language Film category. One of the contenders is South Korean actress Kim Seo-hyung who appeared in supporting roles in the popular koreanovelas ‘Temptation of Wife’ and ‘Lovers in Paris.’
Despite the tight race, Eugene’s prospects are high as Mga Kwentong Barbero had already won awards at the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), including the top prize. Eugene had also won Best Actress at the 26th Tokyo International Film Festival for the same role last October 2013.
Although more popularly known among Filipinos as the quirky ‘Kimmy Dora,’ in the international arena, Eugene has broken through some of the most respected awards bodies with her films. ‘Ang Babae sa Septic Tank,’ which Eugene starred, was chosen to represent the Philippines in the 84th Academy Awards, but it did not make the shortlist.
To commemorate her contributions to the film industry, Eugene was also listed as recipient of the Dekada Award by the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) for the 30th Star Awards for Movies. The Dekada Award is only given to actors who have reached the greatest number of achievements in a decade.
