Filipino European Migrants International Chess Academy Launched at Philippine Embassy, Rome
The Filipino European Migrants International Chess Academy or FEMICA was officially launched at the Philippine Embassy in Rome on 24 March 2013 through the “First Italian-Filipino Chess Team Goodwill Match: Ambassador Virgilio A. Reyes, Jr. Invitational Cup.”
H.E. Ambassador Virgilio A. Reyes, Jr. and Hon. Roberto Mastrantonio, President of the 7th Municipality of Rome, led the ceremonial moves which marked the official opening of the tournament. A total of 30 players – 15 Italians and 15 Filipinos, participated in the tournament. The Philippine team won the Ambassador’s cup with a score of 38 points against 20 points of the Italian team. Prior to the tournament, FEMICA President and International Chess Master Virgilio Vuelban conducted an orientation for the children who enrolled at the Chess Academy. In his message, Ambassador Reyes highlighted the academic and social benefits of chess to children as proven by many scientific studies and research. He further encouraged all the youth and second-generation Filipinos as well as their parents to continue with this activity provided by the Philippine Embassy and FEMICA.
