A friend calls Merkel in ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’
Wolfgang Bosbach of the German Party Christian Democrats (CDU) rang her friend in the ‘phone-a-friend’ option in the popular game show ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire.’ Sadly, the recipient of the call, Chancellor Merkel, was too busy with Germany’s state of affairs.
Bosbach recently guested in RTL’s quiz show and was fighting to win €500,000 if only he could answer the last question correctly: why was the East German WM66 washing machine was legendary?
He chose his party ally and Germany’s head of state Angela Merkel to help him answer the question via ‘phone-a-friend.’ Merkel grew up in former communist East Germany.
The politician wasn’t slated to win that night, however, and was forwarded to the chancellor’s voicemail. Discouraged, he opted to back out from answering the question and took home €125,000. The winning is to be spent on good causes.
As to why he chose the chancellor out of all people to call, Bosbach explained ‘she’s always happy to see me and hear my voice.’ He received a text message from Merkel after the show, saying ‘Ok whatever it was, warm greetings from am.’
Bosbach is Deputy Chairman of Merkel’s CDU/CSU parliamentary group. He has been serving as MP for 20 years.
