Gigi Reyes: State Witness Prospect
Atty. Gigi Reyes quietly arrived in the country to finally face the charges filed against her after six months of staying in the United States. According to Nick Ferrer, spokesperson for the Bureau of Immigration, she arrived at 4a.m. last Saturday, April 19 aboard Philippine Airlines Flight PR 105.
Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago urged Jessica “Gigi” Reyes to apply as state witness for the plunder case that includes the names of Senators Jinggoy Estrada, Juan Ponce Enrile and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and its mastermind Janet Lim Napoles. Senator Santiago believes that although she played a part in the PDAF scam, she is the least guilty and there is no other option for her but to apply as a state witness rather than be a fugitive.
Atty. Reyes, was a former chief of staff of Senator Enrile. She flew to the United States in 2013 following the plunder charges filed against her. She was accused for having signed documents to release Enrile’s PDAF to Napoles’ fake non-government organizations. Santiago said that her testimony will be vital in the resolution of the pork barrel scam believing that Enrile was the mastermind in influencing the two Senators, Estrada and Revilla.
On the contrary, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, expressed uncertainties whether Gigi Reyes could qualify as a state witness since under the Department of Justice (DOJ), Gigi Reyes is still one of the primary suspects of the nation’s biggest plunder scam. De Lima further added in a text message to reporters that she was not aware of Reyes’ return and is not at all surprised if ever she did. De Lima also said, “Reyes would have to face the charges and deal with the country’s justice system. She stressed though that, having Reyes as a state witness is the Ombudsman’s decision.
Similarly Malacanang also declared that it would be the DOJ that will decide on the prospect of approving Jessica Reyes’ application as a state witness, if ever she applies to be one.
