‘Ikaw Lamang’ fans can’t stop talking about retro Fashion

Fans of the hit prime time period-drama ‘Ikaw Lamang’ starring Coco Martin and Kim Chui are making a buzz especially in the recent weeks.

No, it’s not just because the Alkalde’s son Franco Hidalgo (played by Jake Cuenca) just proposed and got rejected by belle of the ball and hacienda heiress Isabelle Miravelez (played by Kim Chiu). But it had a lot to do with Philippine TV’s most-talked about actors today Jake and Kim: how they looked.

Since Ikaw Lamang is set in the 1970s among the households of powerful sugar plantation landowners called hacienderos of Central Visayas, the characters must look the part of the setting and the times. This explains why the prime time viewers are treated to a nightly dose of retro fashion:

It’s a world of bell-bottom trousers, platform shoes and giant hair on the set of Ikaw Lamang, bringing the audiences closer to the look and feel of the 70s. The production and costume designers have come so close to reviving the genuine look of the era that many were blown away by the show’s attention to details in the first few weeks.

Every girl in the 70s wanted Farrah Fawcett’s feather hair, so Ikaw Lamang hairstylists got it for the naturally straight-haired Kim

Jake and Kim’s fashion and hairstyles have particularly caught the attention of many of the soap’s fans, who couldn’t help but shout out their love or hate of the 70s era fashion.

@BiboyJArboleda said ‘Ano tela kaya ng dress ni Isabelle? Banlon? Seda? Nylon? georgette ? chiffon? Satin? #ikawlamangtheproposal.

@TeamKimChiu said ‘Isabelle’s outfit is sophisticated and elegant! Very 70s outfit! @prinsesachinita #IkawLamangTheProposal.

Super Like ko talaga yong retro styles nina @ijakecuenca @prinsesachinitq  love it :) di tuloy ako makatulog’ said @IOKEYYOUOK.

Many couldn’t hide their shock at the fashion sense of Franco and Isabelle. Of course, the actors are not immune to bashing from those who find the 70s fashion too different from their taste. Some have especially criticised Franco’s look, bashing Jake in the process. But there are still fans out there who know the difference:

‘@ijakecuenca that’s what I was saying. They’re making a freaking big deal about the wigs. Im like seriously? The plot is in the 70’s people!’ said @blujay_jav.

‘@ijakecuenca Don’t mind them, Señorito Franco. Haciendero ka, obrero lang sila,’ quipped @ono_bonono.

Jake meanwhile tweeted a piece of his mind to those who wouldn’t stop bashing him or his character:

Well said, Jake!
