Justin Timberlake won the lifetime achievement Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award in MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMA) on Monday. The award was given for his contributions to MTV’s culture.
On stage, the singer said “I don’t deserve this award. But I’m not going to give it back.” The singer also won video of the year for Mirrors. But the highlight of his performance was the few minutes he shared on stage with his former group ‘N Sync.
Justin also recognised his bandmates in ‘N Sync, saying “half of the Moonmen I’ve ever won, I won with those four guys right there.” Moonman refers to the statuette given to the awardees. He added “so above all else, I’m going to share this, we can keep it my house, but I’m going to share this award with them.”
The Song of the Summer went to Best Song Ever by One Direction. The best male video was given to Bruno Mars for Locked Out Heaven. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift won best female video for I Knew You Were Trouble.
Cameras zoomed in on Swift’s ex-boyfriend Harry Styles of One Direction when she said “I want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I’ve got one of these.”
Rapper Macklemore’s Same Love won best video with a social message. The song supports gay rights and condemns homophobia in hip hop and rap culture. Macklemore and Lewis’ video Can’t Hold Us also won best hip hop video.
Fresh from a hip operation, Lady Gaga performed and managed four costume changes during her set. But it was Miley Cyrus of Hannah Montana fame who stole the show.
The 20 year old singer danced provocatively with R&B singer Robin Thicke while wearing nude latex bikini. She also performed We Can’t Stop with alongside giant bears on stage. Her stint has since sparked waves in social media sites.
