Why is Lani Misalucha singing on Manila’s dusty Bangketa
Lani Misalucha drew attention last month after appearing on the dusty streets of Manila singing for blind musicians. But more than the sensation it created, the street performance proved some things about Asia’s Nightingale that not many know about.
The ‘social experiment’ by Lani shows her wearing a simple camisa de chino and flip flops while singing for blind street performers Ben and Flor. At the beginning of the experiment, Lani wore sunglasses so as not to give away her identity.
After singing ‘Saan Darating ang Umaga,’ and by then some of her audiences have already recognised her powerful voice, Lani removed her glasses, identified herself and went on to sing two more songs: ‘Anak’ and ‘Starting Over Again.’
Lani singing ‘Anak’ on the street
The flash street performance became viral in Facebook for a few days because it showed Lani in a very unique stage: the sidewalk. However, more than just the condition of her performance, the social experiment revealed a greater side to Lani that many do not know.
Lani gamely sang more for the blind singers Ben and Flor, coaxing watchers and passers-by to make a donation for the couple. After the performance, Lani said she felt that as ‘a mangaawit sa kalye, hinahangaan ko po yung mag-asawa [Ben and Flor].
Lani’s game approach to the experimental performance, her ability to be simple and, above all, her humility to spend the day experiencing a humble couple’s job and helping them earn in the process reveals a new face about the international singer.
‘I’ll always treasure this moment.’
