Megan Young: ‘Ako na Talaga!’

Megan Young talks about how life as Miss World is changing her.

The Miss World title has been dubbed as ‘the elusive title’ for many years after a number of near-hits by earlier representatives from the Philippines. But this was until Megan Young finally brought home the crown to the delight of Filipinos worldwide on 28 September 2013, becoming the first Filipino to hold the title.

Four months after being named the world’s most beautiful, Megan talked about how life has changed for her in an interview with Boy Abunda in the programme ‘Bandila’. But first she confessed that she still couldn’t believe she won the competition: ‘Sometimes I can’t believe it and… when I’m doing my duties of course I feel that. But when I’m at home… sometimes hindi pa rin ako makapaniwala.’

The 23-year-old half-American added that there are plenty of things behind the camera that people don’t know much about when it comes to preparing for Miss World. She said she didn’t expect preparations were tough: ‘Sa showbiz relaxed lang ako. I was very laid back sa pananamit, sa pagtayo ko, sa pagsasalita ko and there’s training in every single aspect. From the way you speak, the way you dress, talk, walk… even the way I fix myself up!’

But Megan said she is thankful showbiz had already somehow prepared her for the Miss World pageant by teaching her how to converse with people. One of the rigors of being Miss World is meeting with people from different backgrounds and cultures. To better fulfill her duties as Miss World, Megan has also started to learn Spanish:

So far, Megan said life as Miss World has been fun. She added ‘At the same time, I’m learning step by step on the embodiment of Miss World. Kung ano ba talaga ang purpose behind it.’ For the beauty queen, this purpose includes ‘reaching out to those na walang resources. Na di alam yung anong pu-pwede nilang gawin. Inspiring other people.’

Megan said she has already matured thanks to her experiences with Miss World: ‘I can say that now I am a woman (laughs), I finally act like a woman.’ But she said there are some things that remain the same, like who she really is behind the beauty queen title. ‘Importante pa rin sa akin na I can be silly at times.’

The bubbly and ever-smiling beauty said she continues to remain thankful all the time. Just recently, Megan thanked People Asia for asking her to be the cover for their December issue, much to the delight of fans:
