Ms Universe – Philippines MJ Lastimosa finally gets her true Love
Mary Jean ‘MJ’ Lastimosa’s fight to be this country’s most outstanding beauty queen has been a long struggle that began in 2011. But three long years after that hurtful loss, she has finally grabbed the object of her desire: the Miss Universe – Philippines crown.
MJ defeated crowd favourites and waded through bashers’ criticisms to win the Miss Universe – Philippines title last Sunday at the 2014 Binibining Pilipinas pageant. In her first sit-down interview after the win, she told Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino that, moments before the winners were announced, ‘I was just praying so hard. Sabi ko “Lord please ibigay ninyo na ito sa akin.” Naiiyak na ko because of that.’
The nervous tears instantly became tears of joy for MJ, who had been defeated twice at the 2011 and 2012 Binibining Pilipinas competitions.
Now that she is officially our representative to the 2014 Miss Universe pageant, MJ is ready to embrace a new chapter in her life and love. When asked if suitors were lining up now that she is Miss Universe – Philippines, she said ‘I am focused on my responsibilities… dun ako in love ngayon.’
Like falling in love, MJ must dedicate her full attention to her responsibilities and do her best to represent the country in the international arena. She follows in the footsteps of runner-up winners like Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, Janine Tugonon and Ariella Arida, and meeting the public’s expectations will put a lot of pressure on her.
However, MJ admits she is still well composed at the moment and not thinking of the pressure of her responsibilities. She believes in the power of faith and owes her win to perfect timing: ‘[I thank the] Lord talaga. Every time my supporters would send a message of goodluck, I would always ask them to pray with me.’
Three long years of dedication to becoming Miss Universe – Philippines and three attempts to win the crown has already made MJ ready to accept another loss. However, she was never discouraged. Her win this year is a vindication of all her past efforts and is proof of the adage ‘knock and the door will be opened.’
