International boxing icon and Saranggani representative Manny Pacquiao files a house bill that will establish a community fitness centre in every barangay in the country. This is done in line with the Philippine government’s bid to promote physical education and encourage sports programmes.
The representative said that the centre will serve as a venue for physical fitness and wellness programmes. He added, “Involving the citizens in physical fitness activities and sports program is one method of maintaining our physical and mental health condition.”
In addition, sports activities will be available for residents of the barangay. Training for league competitions, amateur sports, and international competitions will be one goal of the programme.
Overall, the fitness centre will help citizens be more healthy and alert, and will promote self-discipline and teamwork.
Under the House Bill 58, mayors of cities and municipalities are to appoint a full time fitness instructor to manage the centre. The instructor will be paid not less than P10,000 as monthly compensation, to be charged to the budget of the city or municipal health officer.
Among the duties of the instructor will be to consult with residents to identify physical fitness activities and sports programmes to be implemented in the centre. The instructor must also introduce and implement fitness and sports competitions for the barangay.
