Star-struck is the best word to describe those who took part in this momentous meeting in Vatican City. Avid football fan and first Latin American pontiff Pope Francis met and cheered the Argentine and Italy’s national football players on a VIP meeting Tuesday. The private audience was set before Italy and Argentina’s national football teams meet head-to-head on a friendly match Wednesday in Rome.
Pope Francis hoped that the players continue to be role models on and off the field. He lamented the state of the football world with news of violence and discrimination among fans. The pope also asked for support and prayers as he plays in the field “God put me on.”
Italy and Argentina’s long-awaited match in Rome renews the teams’ famed rivalry after twelve years.
