Pregnancy surprises nun in Italy

A nun in Italy made headlines around the world after giving birth to a healthy baby boy on Wednesday. But the 31-year-old nun from El Salvador said that she was not aware of the pregnancy and only complained of abdominal pains when she was rushed to the hospital.
The Italian city of Rieti, with only 47,700 inhabitants, was rocked by news of the birth that drew international attention. Meanwhile, the nun’s baby boy weighed 3.5 kilograms (7.7 pounds) and both are doing well in the hospital.
In an interview with Italian news agency ANSA, she said ‘I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain.’ The baby has been named Francesco (Francis) after national patron saint Francis of Assisi, a popular name in Italy and the pope’s chosen title.
People at the hospital have started collecting clothes and donations for the baby and his mother.
The mother is said to have come from the Little Disciples of Jesus convent in Campomoro near the city. The convent manages old people’s homes. Fellow nuns at the convent said they were also surprised by the news.
Rieti mayor Simone Petrangeli urged the public and the media to respect the woman’s privacy. Meanwhile, local pastor Don Fabrizio Borrello said ‘I guess she’s telling the truth when she says she arrived at the hospital unaware of the pregnancy.’
He also assured the public that the nun will be keeping her baby.
