Is religion stopping Manny Pacquiao from knocking out Opponents?
Manny Pacquiao has risen in prominence for his quick punches and lighting speed. At the height of his career, he knocked out Erik Morales, Jorge Solis, Ricky Hatton and scored technical knock outs against Marco Barrera, David Diaz and Miguel Cotto.
In later years, however, experts have noticed that Manny’s punches have lost their bite. His own trainers confirm this and all point to one big shift in Pacman’s life that affected his boxing: religion.
His upcoming opponent Timothy Bradley commented on Thursday that ‘[Manny’s] not finishing guys. Something’s changed.’ Manny’s own coach Freddie Roach said Pacman has ‘lost the killer instinct’ and that ‘His religious outlook on life…is the major reason why he hasn’t knocked people out. I’m sure of it.’
According to the daily broadsheet Inquirer, Pacquiao left the Catholic Church back in 2011 for a Bible-based movement who call themselves Christians. His mother Mommy Dionisia believed that Pacquiao’s defeat via knockout by Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012 was the result of ‘changing his religion.’
Manny’s camp mentioned that the boxer is surrounded by seven pastors who are distracting him. One of the boxer’s associates revealed that three of the pastors have joined the boxer in Las Vegas for the Pacquiao-Bradley 2 bout.
Promoter Bob Arum also had something to say about the pastors: ‘When you have Bible study every night, that’s wearing. You can’t prevent moochers’
Meanwhile, Manny assured the public that religion has not affected his style and that it will not hurt his boxing career. He also said that he will use the issue as ‘a challenge to me to prove I’m right’ and as an inspiration for him ‘to focus.
‘Those who follow God see the fruits of life.’
Despite the public spat Pacquiao’s camp has with the boxer’s pastors and the allegations of him ‘losing fire,’ fight experts and fans still believe that Manny will emerge the victor in this weekend’s fight at the MGM Grand.
The betting odds are against Bradley and Manny is emerging as the favourite. Meanwhile, experts believe that Manny will be out on a vengeance this Sunday and is focused on regaining the welterweight belt Bradley ‘stole’ from him in 2012.
Motivation and mindset are the biggest reasons experts are siding on Manny. But many agree that Bradley will not be an easy opponent to beat.
