Bettors win big as Suarez bites and gets FIFA Ban
The verdict is in: Uruguay and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is banned for 9 international games and from any football activity in the next four months, said FIFA yesterday. This is his punishment for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in their World Cup match early this week.
FIFA Disciplinary Committee Chairman Claudio Sulser commented ‘Such behavior cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field.’
But while Suarez and his teammates will be disappointed with the news, a number of Norwegian bettors are happy with the incident after wagering their kroners that the striker will bite an opponent in Brazil.
Swedish betting company Betsson said they lost six figures in Norwegian kroner for their bet ‘Vil Luis Suarez bite en annen spiller?’ (Will Luis Suarez bite another player?). The company said that 167 punters from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and other countries took up the bet, creating a 175/1 odds.
The bettors had been counting on a World Cup bite by Suarez who has gained notoriety as a biter. Suarez had been banned twice in the past for biting two players in different games. But regardless of his rap sheet, he has been voted Player of the Year by colleagues and journalists.
Among the winners of the bets are Thomas Syverson from Trondheim who won 5,600 NOK (670 Euro) by betting 32 NOK, and Lillestrøm SK’s Ruben Gabrielsen who won 3,500 kroner. The biggest winner is an anonymous bettor who got 20,000 kroner.
