Shocking new twist to Cornejo-Vhong rape Case
Just when actor-host Vhong Navarro’s case against Cedric Lee and Deniece Cornejo has started preliminary investigation, a former beauty pageant contestant appears and is tying another rape case around Vhong’s neck.
Roxanne Cabanero, a former Binibining Pilipinas contestant, filed an affidavit citing rape against the 37-year-old comedian on 19 February. In the affidavit, Roxanne said the rape happened back in 2010 inside a car somewhere in Ortigas. After the alleged rape, Roxanne said she was threatened by the actor to keep quiet.
According to Roxanne, Vhong ‘threatened me; takot ako. I was young, he violated me… He raped me.’ She said she trusted Vhong, but that he had ‘turned into a monster.’ Roxanne said she had been inspired by Deniece’s story, which was why she surfaced even though the rape happened four years ago.
If Roxanne’s testimony is proven truthful, then Vhong may be justly tried for violation of Republic Act 8353 or the Anti-Rape Law of 1997. The punishment for rape in the Philippines is reclusión perpetua or life imprisonment.
However, if the complainant has filed an affidavit containing untruthful statements, then she may be accused of lying under oath or perjury. The punishment for perjury in the Philippines is imprisonment of up to six months.
The rape case will be handled by the Pasig City Prosecutor’s Office and the victim will be represented by attorney Virgilio Batalla. Many speculated about the timing of the new case and the possibility of the victim’s connection with Cedric Lee’s group.
