Spanish king bares royal family’s Salary
In a stunning move that goes against tradition, Spain’s King Don Juan Carlos gave his wife Queen Sofia and daughter-in-law Princess Letizia fixed salaries and bared these figures to the public.
The pioneering tell-all move fully discloses the sum members of the royal family will receive for the year: Queen Sofia will get €131,739 in 2014, almost similar to last year’s amount while Letizia the future queen will get €102,464. The king will receive €292,752 while his successor Prince Felipe will receive half that amount.
Spain’s royal family the Bourbons agreed to publicise their salaries after the king’s youngest daughter Princess Cristina got involved in a tax fraud scandal last year, igniting calls for the abolition of the monarchy.
The Zarzuela Palace is also slated to reveal how it intends to spend the monarchy’s 2014 income of €7.7m as required by the country’s updated Transparency Law. Aside from the freezing of the salaries, the drop in the royal family’s income by 2% forced the king and prince to cut their salaries. The bills for the king’s surgeries last year were also made public.
