Surprising connection between ears and weight Loss
by FFE News Staff
Korean researchers just published a study in the journal BMJ Acupuncture in Medicine claiming that ear acupuncture can help people lose weight.
In their study, the researchers tested the effects of Korean five-point acupuncture treatment versus the standard one-point treatment on weight loss. A sham treatment was also set up to measure the difference in effect.
Those who underwent the five-point treatment received small indwelling needles in five areas of the ears that affected obesity: Shen-men, stomach, spleen, hunger and endocrine. Meanwhile, those who underwent the one-point treatment received theirs in the area targeting hunger. The participants had to wear the needles under surgical tape for one week. New needles were inserted every week for a total of 8 weeks. The participants in the group that received the sham treatment meanwhile were made to believe they were carrying the needles under the surgical tape.
During the 8-week period, the participants were asked to follow a restricted diet. The participants’ BMI, waist circumference, body fat mass, percentage of body fat and blood pressure were all noted down before and after the trial to measure the effect of the experiment.
At the end of the trial period, the researchers were able to accumulate significant results. But even mid-way through the trial, the participants have already been registering BMI reduction. Those who received the five-point trial showed a 6.1% reduction, while the one-point group showed 5.7% reduction. Both groups also showed weight loss. The sham group did not register any changes.
The researchers concluded that five-point needle treatment and one-point needle treatment were effective in reducing body weight for a short period. They added that the five-point treatment may be more effective at changing waist circumference and abdominal fat.
