Tell your family to get PhilHealth Coverage
If Senator Ralph Recto’s new measures get approved, then there will be two more reasons why getting a PhilHealth coverage is highly advisable to your family living in the Philippines.
The Senate President Pro Tempore has just submitted two bills that require PhilHealth to:
- make its coverage mandatory to all senior citizens and
- cover tuberculosis (TB) treatment
The two bills were discussed for the first time in the Senate Health and Demography Committee chaired by Senator Teofisto Guingona III yesterday.
Recto argued that PhilHealth had the resources to provide the two additional benefits. He said that the company had Php117 billion in reserves and has been given billions of pesos in budget by Congress. He also stressed that PhilHealth recently increased contributions by 100%.
‘Because of your many resources, can’t you provide free health insurance for all senior citizens…They have contributed to the country so much in their young life,’ said Recto.
Recto meanwhile noted that TB is the country’s 6th leading cause of death and is reason enough to push for greater coverage for TB patients.
PhilHealth president Alex Padilla raised concerns on both bills, saying that the agency may lose money once they boost coverage for senior citizens and TB patients. He argued that the number of seniors will only grow in the next 20 years and that TB treatments are already covered for Php4,000.
He said ‘We know the intention of our senators and we respect and honour the laws to be legislated. But estimates and studies might change and that means you give more benefits to seniors this might reduce the benefits of others.’
