Thousands turn up in UNDP match against poverty for typhoon Yolanda
11th Match Against Poverty by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) was a success for the Philippines as 21,000 fans came to watch the game in Bern, Switzerland.
Ronaldo & Zidane Friends beat BSC Young Boys 8-6.
Here is the match highlights:
UNDP Partnerships Manager Aziyade Poltier said ‘Although UNDP scored 8 and the Bern team Young Boys scored 6, it was really the Philippines that scored 14 because both sides were playing for them.’ UNDP said they will set aside two thirds of the proceeds of the match to boost rehabilitation programmes in areas affected by typhoon Yolanda.
Ronaldo, Marta and Zidane calling out for more support
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also thanked UNDP, Berne Football Club, Ronaldo & Zidane Friends and all 21,000 fans at the stadium ‘for coming out to show their support for the Philippines.’
At present, the UNDP’s recovery efforts encompass a three-year programme that is concentrated in the cities and towns of Tacloban, Guiuan, Ormoc and Roxas. The programme includes strengthening local government unit communication networks, restoring livelihood and improving systems of disaster preparedness.
