As hotels and bed & breakfasts launch into another National Barter Week, bizarre items have been passed in lobbies across Italy. From vintage items to services, find out what hotel owners are requesting from guests who want to check in between 18-24 November.
Many B&Bs are asking for food, books, smartphones according to the website en.settimanadelbaratto.it. Novel items for trade are also on the radar of some of the hotel owners.
Piedmont region B&B The Tre Esse di Roccasparvera is requesting ‘any objects relating to Disney characters from the Seven Dwarves’ while Quartu Sant'Elena, Sardinia’s Sul Mare B&B wants a gramophone.
Others are requesting Mickey Mouse comic strips, roller skates, Coca Cola memorabilia, a tricycle and a beekeeping set.
Tourists are also touting their wares. A psychologist is offering daily consultations for her stay. Others are giving away cleaning, gardening, photography and nail-painting lessons in English. Another hotel-hopeful is also offering advice on how to set up a website and run a business.
The trading hoteliers and tourists are reminded not to ‘sell themselves short or be embarrassed’ and that all proposals should be done ‘seriously and politely, with affability.’
National Barter Week started six years ago as a bartering initiative for hotels and guesthouses during the economic slump. Sardinian village B&B VillaVillaColle started the bartering trend in the country. Thousands are now participating in the event, while 800 continue to accept barters all year-round.
