Vhong Navarro issue turns to network War

Even GMA7 was not safe from the wrath of Vhong Navarro’s fans.

As investigations on the case of Vhong Navarro continue to implicate more people, many find that even bigger names are not immune to being dragged down into the issue. One of these is network giant and ABS-CBN’s closest rival GMA7.

After news of the alleged mauling of Vhong Navarro surfaced, many of his fans in the Twitterverse were busy looking for information on one person who was central to the blockbuster headline: Deniece Cornejo.

Just who was this Deniece Cornejo who filed a rape complaint against Vhong Navarro? This is what fans of the dancer-host and followers of the news dug up:

In Deniece’s Instagram account, she posted a photo of her with GMA7 Chair and CEO attorney Felipe L Gozon. Fans did not miss the fact that Deniece referred to Gozon as ‘lolo felipe’ in the caption, leading many to believe both were related. It was when this photo went viral online that the name of GMA7 was dragged into the issue.

GMA7’s alleged bias against Navarro was further fuelled by some observations on the network’s focus whenever it aired the issue. Some observers said GMA7 focused more on the ‘rapist’ angle and that the network was defending Deniece. Here are what some Twitter users said:

Many people also did not like how GMA7’s Jessica Soho covered the news in her programme ‘State of the Nation with Jessica Soho.’ In the episode, the veteran broadcaster said ‘I don’t know if itong video na kuha sa lobby ng condominium will amount to anything much,’ a statement which Twitter users reacted to negatively:

Because of the seeming bias in GMA7’s reports and the alleged connection between Deniece and Gozon, fans of Vhong and ABS-CBN used #GMAPhilippinesWorstNetwork to air their disappointment over the rival network. But GMA7 fans retaliated by using #ABSCBNKapamilyasTheWorldsWorstFantards. The fact that Vhong was an ABS-CBN talent only worsened the ‘network war’ being waged by fans online.

GMA7 had since clarified the issues raised by angry fans and netizens. The network has released a formal statement that clears Gozon of any connections to Deniece. The statement also explained that GMA7 had tried reaching Vhong’s side as well as Deniece’s side for its news:

‘This is to clarify that the complainant involved in the Vhong Navarro incident is not related to GMA Chairman and CEO attorney Felipe L Gozon. From the moment GMA News learned of the story, it sought the side of Vhong Navarro. Chito Rono, his manager, gave GMA News a written statement, which was aired yesterday (25 January). Today, GMA News aired an interview with Navarro’s lawyer Alma Mallonga. The report about the alleged attempted rape was based on the blotter filed at the Investigative Section of the Southern Police District where Vhong Navarro was taken after the incident. Other news organisations also reported it.’

Soho also issued a statement in another episode of State of the Nation with Jessica Soho, assuring the public of their unbiased reporting: ‘Makakaasa po kayo na ang GMA News ay nananatiling walang kinikilingan at patas sa pagbabalita.’

Despite the clarifications made by the network, it seems that the word war between network supporters will remain in the online sphere. Until the Vhong Navarro issue is settled, this network war may continue to rage on.
