What can seniors do to prolong their Life?
What is the key to the fountain of youth? A research said it’s doing chores.
A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine said that seniors who cannot commit to formal exercise can take on routine activities to improve their health. 60+ year old adults on do-it-yourself (DIY) activities and who garden daily can cut their risk of heart attack and stroke by 30%, promoting long life.
The researcher’s findings were based on a 12.5-year study of 4,000 adults age 60 and over residing in Stockholm, Sweden. At the start of the study, the participants underwent a health check on their diet, alcohol intake, cigarette use, and how physically active they were. They were also asked how often they did routine chores like gardening, car maintenance and DIY and whether they have taken formal exercise.
Those who did routine activities daily and those who took formal exercise had the lowest risk profile at the start of the study. But after the12.5 year monitoring period, the researchers found out that those who maintained a high level of routine activities had a 27% lower risk of heart attack or stroke and a 30% lower risk of death from all causes.
The authors of the research said that metabolism might be behind the improvement. As older adults perform more physical activities, their metabolic rates boost and hormone production is maintained at normal levels.
